Alumna receives an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

June 5, 2009

Angelean Hendrix is the recipient of a prestigious three year National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. A total of 62 GRFs were awarded this year in all of mathematics, applied mathematics, and biostatistics. Angelean was in the first wave of students to receive the NSF funded Undergraduate Mathematics and Biology scholarship at UTSA, where she worked closely with Dr. David Senseman and others in the area of Mathematical Biology. Angelean is now pursuing a Doctorate in Applied Mathematics under the supervision of Dr. James Selgrade at North Carolina State University. Congratulations!

Alumnus update

April 1, 2009

Linh Nguyen is the recipient of the L.F. Guseman Prize at Texas A&M University. The award carries a $500 monetary prize. Linh received his Master's degree in our department in 2006 under the supervision of Dr. Dung Le. Linh is also the recipient of the KAUST-IAMCS Fellowship and the Regents Fellowship at Texas A&M.

Toan Nguyen, one of our graduate students in mathematics, will soon defend his Ph.D. thesis at Indiana University this coming summer. Immediately after his defense, he is invited to visit Insititut de Mathématiques à Jussieu, France for a year 2009-2010 and then come back to the US to be a Prager assistant professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, RI. Toan completed his Master's degree, Mathematics concentration, from our graduate program in 2006.


Alumna visits UTSA

Dr. Danielle Lyles gave a seminar presentation titled The interplay between noise and oscillations: 2 very different biological examples in the Department of Biology. Dr. Lyles graduated from UTSA with a B.S. in Mathematics with Honors, writing an honors thesis under the supervision of Dr. Mary Lou Zeeman, and went on to Cornell University, where she earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics last year under the supervision of Dr. John Guckenheimer. Currently Dr. Lyles is a postdoc lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California at Davis.

Dr. Norman wins the Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award

Dr. Sandy Norman is the recipient of this year's Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in the tenure/tenure track category. Dr. Norman was presented with the award at the University Life Awards ceremony on April 5. Congratulations!


UTSA Math hosts the annual Texas PDE conference

On March 24-25, the department hosted the 30th TXPDE seminar. The seminar was organized by Drs. Cao, Chen, and Le with the assistance of our able staff and our student volunteers Sean Beatty, Frank Bradley, and Alicia Machuca. The two day seminar was beautifully executed.

Dr. Mary Lou Zeeman has left UTSA after a decade and a half for Bowdoin College. She will be missed by many.

Dr. Berriozábal is a semifinalist hero for the Volvo For Life Award

Dr. Manuel Berriozábal has been selected as a semifinalist hero from the State of Texas for the fifth annual Volvo For Life Award.

A screening panel chose five top heroes from each State and the District of Columbia. Three finalists in each category of Safety, Quality of Life, and Environment will be determined by a public vote - online poll is open till February 4, 2007. One winner in each category winner will be selected from the finalists by an Awards judging panel. One Grand Award Winner will be selected from the three winners by Volvo Cars of North America, LLC and the panel of judges.


Department of Mathematics at UTSA Re-united

September 1, 2006

The Department of Applied Mathematics and the Department of Science and Mathematics Education have merged along with the Office of Mathematics Core into a newly re-formed Department of Mathematics. Dr. Sandy Norman will serve as Interim Department Chair of Mathematics, while the search for permanent leadership continues.
