The existence of nodal solutions is characterized in a one-dimensional class of degenerate boundary value problems of logistic type. The degeneration coming from a vanishing weight function multiplying the nonlinearity. Whereas in classical problems when the weight function is everywhere positive the set of nodal solutions with a given number of nodes consists of a single component bifurcating from zero at the corresponding higher order eigenvalue, in the degenerate case this set might consist of several components, making the analysis of the existence and the structure of nodal solutions a real mathematical challenge.
