From Round-Robin Tournaments and Networking Events to Combinatorial Designs March 01, 2017 Department News

Dr. Eduardo Duenez

Associate Professor

UTSA Department of Mathematics

How should player matches be scheduled in a round-robin tournament? How to organize an efficient networking event in which people meet in small groups for a few minutes, then swap groups, and swap again, until making everybody else's acquaintance? How did a group of MIT students earn 8-figure winnings in the Massachusetts lottery over the span of a decade? The answers to these and many other questions lie in the theory of combinatorial designs. We present several problems in design theory and explain the techniques used to solve them, including elementary number theory and geometry.
